News Sport Broadcast students win Royal Television AwardHome>News>Sport Broadcast students win Royal Television Award News | 12 June 2023Two Cardiff Metropolitan University students have picked up prestigious national television awards for documentaries following sport in Wales. Ben Cosgrove and Chris Knight, MSc Sport Broadcast graduates, both won at the Royal Television Society Cymru Awards. Ben, from Pontypridd, was part of the team producing the BBC documentary, ‘Together Stronger’ following the transformation of Wales’ football team leading to the FIFA World Cup 2022, which won the industry award for Best Sports Documentary. Ben landed the role as researcher at Barn Media, producers of the show, during his studies and, since graduating, is now working with the production company full time. Press | S4C29 July 2022Sgorio has announced the first live matches that will be shown in the new football season. At least 35 Welsh domestic football matches will be broadcast on the S4C and Sgorio platforms during the 2022-23 season, from the JD Cymru Premier, JD Welsh Cup, Nathaniel MG Cup and Genero Adran Leagues. The Sgorio cameras will be at the University of South Wales Sport Park for the first live match of the season, between newly-promoted Pontypridd Town and Flint Town United on Saturday 13 August. A huge thank you to the Sport Broadcast course and Joe Towns for giving me the skillset and platform to make the documentary. ”Joe Towns, Senior Lecturer in the School of Sport and Health Sciences, said: “Both Chris and Ben were stand-out students in what was a very talented class of 2022 cohort on the Sport Broadcast MSc. This course has a huge emphasis on storytelling in sport, through many different types of media. ”Chris Knight, also a Sport Broadcast MSc graduate received an award in the best Student Postgraduate category for his documentary on bikepacking in Wales. Chris said: “I’m incredibly proud to win an award at the RTS Awards Wales for my dissertation documentary, ‘Ride the Spine’. Ben said: “It was a privilege to tell the story of a team of players I’ve grown up watching and supporting. Although we were quite surprised to receive the award considering the level of deserving nominees we were up against. This recognition encourages me to continue to create this type of meaningful work and push further to improve the quality of stories we are capable of telling. Ben Cosgrove “I wouldn’t be working for Barn Media or have won an RTS Award if it wasn’t for Cardiff Met’s Sport Broadcast course and course leader Joe Towns. The match will be televised live on S4C, with kick off at 5. 45pm. On Saturday 20 August, the match between Aberystwyth Town and Cardiff Met will also be shown live on S4C (Kick off 5. 45pm). The following week, Sgorio will show three live online matches in a week across its digital platforms, starting with Bala Town v Newtown on Friday 26 August (KO 7. 45pm), before Pen-y-bont v Haverfordwest County on Tuesday 30 August (KO 7.
